Harald Hagemann: A Biographical Sketch
Harald Hagemann was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1934. He studied German literature and philosophy at the University of Göttingen and the University of Munich, and he received his doctorate from the University of Göttingen in 1959. After teaching at the University of Göttingen and the University of California, Berkeley, Hagemann joined the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1969. He retired from UCLA in 2002.
Hagemann's research interests have ranged widely across the field of German literature and culture, from the Middle Ages to the present day. He has published extensively on topics such as the history of the German novel, the relationship between literature and society, and the role of literature in cultural memory.
