The People's Republic of Amnesia: Tiananmen Revisited is a powerful and moving account of the Tiananmen Square protests and massacre of 1989. Author Louisa Lim draws on extensive research, including interviews with survivors and witnesses, to provide a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of this pivotal event.
Lim begins by setting the stage for the protests, which were sparked by the death of Hu Yaobang, a popular reformist leader. She describes the growing discontent among the Chinese people with the government's authoritarian rule and its failure to deliver on its promises of economic and political reform.
The protests began in April 1989, and quickly grew in size and scope. Students from all over China flocked to Tiananmen Square, where they called for democracy and freedom. The government initially tolerated the protests, but as they grew more radical, it began to crack down. On June 4, 1989, the People's Liberation Army opened fire on the protesters, killing hundreds, if not thousands, of people.
In the aftermath of the massacre, the Chinese government went to great lengths to suppress any mention of it. The event was erased from textbooks and the media, and those who spoke out about it were punished. As a result, many Chinese people today have little or no knowledge of what happened in Tiananmen Square.
Lim's book is an important reminder of the Tiananmen Square Massacre and the Chinese government's ongoing efforts to suppress its memory. It is a powerful and moving account of a tragic event that should never be forgotten.
