Diagnosis

The diagnosis of lung cancer typically begins with a chest X-ray or CT scan. If a suspicious lesion is identified, a biopsy will be performed to confirm the diagnosis. Biopsies can be performed using a variety of techniques, including needle biopsy, bronchoscopy, or surgical biopsy.

Treatment

The treatment of lung cancer depends on the stage of the disease, the patient's overall health, and other factors. Surgery is the primary treatment for early-stage lung cancer. Surgery can be used to remove the tumor and surrounding lymph nodes. However, surgery is not an option for all patients with lung cancer.

For patients with advanced-stage lung cancer, a variety of treatment options are available, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapy. Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells throughout the body. Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to kill cancer cells in a specific area of the body. Targeted therapy uses drugs that block specific molecules that are involved in the growth of cancer cells.

Patient Care

In addition to medical treatment, patients with lung cancer will need supportive care to help them manage the symptoms of their disease and improve their quality of life. Supportive care can include pain management, nutritional counseling, and psychological counseling.

Lung cancer is a complex disease, but significant advances have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer in recent years. With the right treatment, patients with lung cancer can achieve long-term survival and improve their quality of life.
